Travis Maxwell, 8th grade student, who is a Boy Scout with Troop 887 in Jacksonville, completed his Eagle Pro-ject at River City Science Academy. The scout, who turned 14 last week, along with members of his troop in-stalled a flag pole and landscaping at the school. He raised funds for his project through various fundraisers, candy sales, and solicited donations from the American Legion Post 88 and the Florida Air National Guard. The flag dedication ceremony was held on June 1, 2010 with Commander Benny Combs presenting the flag to Max-well and Dogan Tozoglu, principle at the school. In an address to students, faculty, and guests Maxwell indicated that he chose this as his project because every school should have a flag and budget cuts do not allow for schools to make this expen-sive purchase on their own. He stated “having a flag helps to make our students more patriotic and being able to look out of your class and see the flag flying is a great feeling”. Students participated with great enthusiasm as Maxwell led them in the pledge of allegiance following the flag raising. He was awarded Outstanding Citizenship Award for his accomplishment by Dr. Tozoglu.
