Service Learning

Service learning is a method of teaching that pairs classroom instruction with meaningful community service. Too often, what students learn in school is disconnected from anything that they experience in the "real world." Service learning is primarily about finding ways to merge classroom learning with real world applications that can change the world for the better. Students in RCSA's Community Service Club have found these real world applications by working on issues as diverse as homelessness, poverty, bullying/violence, global access to clean water, and social justice for migrant farm workers. As author Neil Postman writes, "We cannot afford to waste the energy and idealism of the young. Their is no question that listlessness, ennui, and even violence in school are related to the fact that students have no useful role to play in society."

Service learning has been a core component of the education at RCSA since its inception. We were recognized by Florida Learn and Serve in 2010 as a Service Learning Leader School for our work in this area and in 2013, we received the Southeast Activism Award by the Peace Jam Foundation at Florida State University for our work on the issue of farm worker justice.
